Cat Command Remote Control Technologies for Construction are reshaping job sites worldwide.
By Caterpillar | Posted: May 08, 2023
By removing the operator from the machine, Cat® Command offers greater safety and increased productivity, especially when dealing with hazardous materials or working in dangerous or remote locations.
For many years Caterpillar has been working with their customers in mining and construction to develop remote control, semi-autonomous and autonomous solutions to help their businesses. This led to the successful launch of Cat Command for construction in North America and Japan in 2021.
And now it’s Europe’s turn with Cat Command now available for select Cat dozers and excavators using the Cat Command station. Matthew Hendry, Global Product Marketing Consultant, Caterpillar. ”We are excited to bring Command to Europe and believe it will bring significant value to customers working in applications such as demolition, stevedoring, munition removals and hazardous materials.”
Matt is also keen to stress that this is still a highly skilled job that needs a highly skilled operator. “You can’t just drop Cat Command on a site and let them run with it. Obviously, you still need highly-skilled operators, but once they’re trained on Cat Command, the sky’s the limit."
“By providing operators with a safer environment to work in, the construction industry will be able to attract people who have previously not considered this career, as well as retain skilled operators for longer.”
While safety cannot be stressed enough, and this is the primary concern for any construction site, it’s only part of the story. As well as being safer, Cat Command enhances job site productivity. Think of those disruptive processes such as blasting in a quarry application. Now, operators can restart production immediately as they are removed from any potential hazards.
Sitting in their Cat Command station, operators have access to four video feeds directly from the machine with all the same information and data they would have if they were sitting in the cab itself but without the noise, vibration and extreme conditions they might otherwise experience. Because the system is deeply integrated with the machine, operators will continue to have access to machine technology such as Cat Grade, Payload, E-Fence, and operator assist features, including boom and bucket assist, swing assist, auto carry and traction control.
Plus, as operators can quickly and easily switch between Cat Command-installed machines, job site locations can be changed with no downtime. Matt expands on this point. “So, an operator could be working on another job site while waiting on the blast from another, then connect straight back after the blast, making the most efficient use of their time. In fact, Cat Command can be connected to as many as five Command ready machines, which allows an operator to switch between machine types at the push of a button. By enabling operators to work from anywhere, while spending their shift in a quiet, safe, comfortable environment, this technology will help transform the industry and the way work gets done.
