It’s said that everyone deserves a second chance, and thanks to Cat Reman, Cat engines get the chance to live again and again and again.
By Caterpillar | Posted: May 08, 2022
For nearly 50 years, Cat Reman has returned parts and components at the end of their lives to like-new condition. That means customers have cut the cost of owning and operating their Cat machines while also reducing waste, lowering greenhouse gases and using fewer raw materials.
Thanks to these customers, Caterpillar has become a world leader in remanufacturing. Today, an old part (called core) can be turned in to Cat Reman for inspection, disassembly, cleaning and salvaging before remanufacturing and reassembly to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) performance specifications of new Cat products. As Marcus Fair, Global On-Highway Truck Engine Sales Manager, Cat Reman, explains, “Basically, you’ve remanufactured this part to make it like new. It’s not like a rebuild or a repair. With Cat Reman, you’re taking core back to the manufacturing process and then testing it to the same specs as new and with a same-as-new warranty for that part.”
The origins of Cat Reman go back to a deal Caterpillar had with Ford to supply engines which could also be supported by a remanufacturing process further down the line. Very quickly, Caterpillar saw the benefit of offering this service for its components and engines – both of which can go into a variety of machines, even on a landfill.
The life of a landfill tipper is hard. Fully loaded, these 50- and 60-ton machines often make as many as 60 tips in one day, a relentless haul that requires significant maintenance and upkeep. That kind of use creates a need for service providers who can keep up.
Having worked 13 years as head of a tipping department, Rick Henry saw the opportunity and established LMR Tipper Services Inc. to refurbish and repower tippers. But he needed a team to handle the engine work, which is where the Cat dealer network’s aftermarket support representatives came in.
Rick began working with Pro-Formance Fuel Injection Service, Inc and Cat dealer Cleveland Brothers to source remanufactured Cat C7 engines and customize them to fit landfill tipper platform specifications. These remanufactured Cat C7 engines were just what was needed for the tipper’s rigorous duty cycle. “These engines not only help our customers save on their costs but also fit the horsepower needed for these tippers. Having Caterpillar reliability and a nationwide service capability adds to that value,” Rick said.
And by working with Pro-Formance and Cleveland Brothers, these engines are backed by their Cat dealership’s two-year warranty. With clients across the U.S. and units located around the globe, having worldwide Cat dealer support and local service is priceless.
But this is just the beginning as Cat Reman continues to find new ways to reduce, reuse, recycle, and reclaim materials which once would have been placed into a landfill - maybe even by a tipper with a Cat C7 remanufactured engine.
