5 Ways to Set Better Boundaries

We’re not talking about the boundaries you establish between yourself and the people in your life. Sure, those boundaries are important. But the ones we’re interested in are more apt to save lives. They’re electronic boundaries for construction machines—invisible fences that surround your equipment and prevent it from bumping up against people and structures while you work. Caterpillar boundary-setting technology is a standard feature on several excavators. We call it E-fence. It sets five types of boundaries.

1. AIM HIGH

The E-fence ceiling feature sets a height limit for the boom. If that limit is reached, boom movement stops automatically, so you don’t touch power lines or hit overhead obstacles.

2. GO LOW

The E-fence floor feature creates a lower boundary the bucket is not allowed to breach. This protects the machine and operator from obstacles located at or below ground level.

3. WATCH FOR THE WALL

Build a virtual barrier in front of the excavator with the E-fence wall feature. It limits the excavator’s reach, reducing the risk of front collisions.

4. SWING SAFELY

If you work near traffic or in other congested areas, use the E-fence swing feature to set swing angles on each side of the machine. Swing motion stops automatically if those barriers are breached.

5. AVOID THE CAB

Activate an invisible barrier around the operator’s environment with the E-fence cab-avoidance feature. It prevents a bucket or other attachment from colliding with the cab, protecting the person inside and reducing the risk of equipment damage.

SET YOUR BOUNDARIES AND GO

We can’t help you create healthy boundaries with your co-workers or neighbors. But we can make it easier for you to protect people and property on your construction site. See your Cat® dealer or read more about E-fence here.
