The Caterpillar Dubai Learning Center in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has transformed training for the oil and gas industry since 2016. The state-of-the-art facility serves operators and technicians, including Cat® dealer technicians, from across the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Eurasia regions. The learning and development programs offered leverage Caterpillar Oil and Gas’ deep industry expertise to meet operators’ evolving needs, particularly in the drilling and pressure pumping sectors that have unique practices for system operation, component integration, installation and more.

As an authorized learning center serving the Eastern Hemisphere, the Dubai facility provides comprehensive trainings that meet the industry’s high standards. It’s no wonder that many operators increasingly leverage the center’s curriculum to help support operational efficiency, maximize uptime and lower total cost of ownership (TCO). The center has worked with multiple oil and gas companies to establish learning solutions customized for the operators’ complex equipment maintenance and repair needs, and it has trained hundreds of technicians through those bespoke programs.

A Flexible, Practical Approach to Training

The Dubai center’s learning solutions and programs use a blended approach of instructor-led training and e-learning with an emphasis on practical applications. To facilitate hands-on learning, the $11 million facility provides full-size running engines and control systems to simulate real-world operations and applications. Participants can work on numerous engines on-site, including the Cat D3500 and Cat D3600 large bore engines. The training is also applicable to the Cat G3500, Cat G3600, Cat C175, Cat C32, and several C-series solutions – and covers all emission system options.

The robust course list spans a range of important focus areas and includes multiple power system courses, most of which can be completed within five days. General trainings encompass heavy equipment maintenance management, advanced engine systems, applied failure analysis, electronic troubleshooting and component reusability.

The center also provides Caterpillar instructor and assessor training programs. Structured on-the-job training, including a skills assessment, is offered as well to support technicians’ professional development.

This comprehensive training approach provides multiple benefits for operators and technicians. Skilled technicians can effectively apply learnings to enhance the value they bring to their daily activities, which helps optimize productivity and asset performance while reducing service costs and downtime. Customized Learning Solutions for Oilfield Companies’ Unique Needs

The Dubai Learning Center sets a high standard for technical education, offering training programs tailored for industry applications and even specific companies’ operational considerations. This customized approach gives participants a thorough and practical understanding of the equipment and its functionalities.

As another example, the Dubai Learning Center worked with a large oil and gas company to establish a comprehensive training program based on their unique technical needs. Twenty-three technicians completed the program in its first year and that number tripled to 69 technicians the following year. It’s anticipated that the number of trainees will continue to increase year after year, demonstrating the program’s value. Such customized learning programs equip technicians to solve evolving complex issues and help maximize uptime.

Our People Make the Difference

Dodi Hendra is a senior training manager at the Dubai Learning Center. Originally from Indonesia, his involvement with Caterpillar’s oil and gas trainings began in the mid-1990s when he embarked on a computer-based, multimedia training program offered through a local Cat dealer. That training program inspired him to pursue a career as a Cat dealer technician, which led to his “dream job” of becoming a Caterpillar Oil & Gas instructor and training supervisor with the local Cat dealer.

Dodi was a key contributor to the Dubai Learning Center’s launch and helped develop its curriculum. Today, he shapes the next generation of talent for the industry by training individuals to operate and maintain Cat equipment.
