Providing Critical Support in
the Marcellus Shale

Oil and Gas Businesses Receive Comprehensive Equipment Life Cycle Support with Caterpillar and the Cat® Dealer Network

The Marcellus Shale Basin is the largest onshore natural gas reserve in the United States, with an estimated 262 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of natural gas (2009). The basin stretches approximately 90,000 miles across several states, including Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, Ohio and Maryland.1

Hydraulic fracturing began to surge in the Marcellus in the early 2000s to reach these extremely deep reserves (over 9,000 feet down at its deepest points). In the first half of 2021, the Marcellus and Utica shale formations in the Appalachian Basin accounted for 34% of all U.S. dry natural gas production.2

A History of Support that Keeps Pace With Industry Dynamics

For more than 80 years, Caterpillar has supported oil and gas businesses where they need it most. As Marcellus production grows, this history of support repeats itself.

Oil and gas investments are costly, and it takes skilled collaborators to properly support operators’ engines to not only minimize unplanned downtime but also lower total cost of ownership (TCO). Today’s oil and gas businesses need complete equipment life cycle support to meet the demand of the Marcellus.

The Cat® dealer network offers the largest number of service providers in the industry, with 160 independent dealers serving 197 countries. Thousands of branches are available worldwide to ensure accessibility.

Operators in the Marcellus Shale Play benefit from the support of multiple Cat dealers, including Ohio Cat, Foley Inc., Carter Cat, Boyd Cat and Cleveland Brothers. Founded in 1948, Cleveland Brothers has grown to offer eight locations across the region to support the gas compression sector’s growth.

T.J. Cleveland, general manager of operations at Cleveland Brothers explained, "With our eleven locations dedicated to oil and gas, we’re able to service all of our customers across our service territory. We have put the dedicated resources in place at all our locations – including service operations, service managers, and field technicians – to ensure we can provide 24/7 support.”

Cleveland Brothers, a Cat dealer for nearly 75 years, constructed their state-of-the-art engine rebuild center (ERC) in Ebensburg to meet the shale boom demands in this region and ensure oil and gas businesses receive the skilled, expert support required to promote engine longevity and uptime – especially for the Cat G3500 and G3600 engines.

The experience of a Marcellus operator demonstrates the benefit an oil and gas business can derive from working with Caterpillar and its dealer network. For example, Repsol, a global energy provider, sends approximately eight Cat engines through Cleveland Brothers’ ERC each month. Cleveland Brothers conducts engine audits when the units are returned to the field to verify their performance and help prevent unplanned downtime. Additionally, the dealer performs 16 to 20 engine top-end overhauls on-site each year for the operator and offers remote monitoring to help prevent unplanned downtime. These efforts have enabled Repsol’s engines to last 15% to 20% longer between overhauls.

“Having close, collaborative relationships with oil and gas businesses allows us to share data and results to optimize equipment longevity – and related costs,” commented Phillip Moser, Cleveland Brothers’ Repsol account manager.
