When referring to next generation updates, Cat® Hydraulic Mining Shovel (HMS) leaders always point to the state-of-the-art cab first. And that’s not an accident. The next generation shovels are designed by operators — for operators. The cab is quieter and more comfortable and provides 40% greater visibility than previous cabs for increased safety and productivity.
“We always want to recognize how important the operator is to the operation of a machine,” says Product Support Manager Chris Mullins. “This shovel is their place of work. It’s the place where they spend hours and hours every day. So, it’s important that we recognize that. When we’re considering cab updates and introducing technologies, we put our operators first.”
Next generation shovels incorporate mining safety best practices as part of their standard design, which focuses on areas such as access, egress and visibility.
Recognizing that a comfortable operator is a productive operator, next generation shovels incorporate features that allow operators to load more and experience less fatigue over the course of a shift.
Comfort features include a Cat Next Gen comfort seat and ergonomic joystick controls; patented 3-seat design; new and improved heating, cooling and ventilation; and superior insulation for reduced noise and temperature control.
Keeping the operator at the forefront of development, the new electronic architecture enables productivity-enhancing features while reducing clutter in the cab at the same time. A brand new 10-inch display consolidates information from all technology systems and presents it in a single, standardized view that is easily visible and accessible to the operator.
The cab also incorporates a number of other enhancements that help operators improve their performance. The majority are made possible through the features in the new expandable electronic architecture.
