Every next generation Cat® Hydraulic Mining Shovel (HMS) is 100% Cat designed, manufactured, integrated and supported. Common designs and componentry reduce the number of unique parts and streamline maintenance. Parts are stocked around the world for fast, efficient service. Service literature is easy to read and understand so technicians have the information they need to perform maintenance and repairs as quickly as possible.
“The advantage we’re bringing over our competitors is that we are delivering the Cat brand promise with shovels,” says Caterpillar Engineering Manager Sean Johnson. “That means Caterpillar DNA from the ground up. Product support, literature, parts support — it’s all there to provide an improved customer experience.”
Access to parts and support is a key consideration when a mine is looking for the right loading tool. “They’ll ask what sort of local support is available, especially with regards to parts stocking,” says Lane Hobenshield, HMS Technical Steward. “If the parts are too far away or there is insufficient stocking, that means the machine could be down for significant periods of time. It all goes back to reliability and need for uptime.”
Hand in hand with the development of the next generation shovels is the development of a next generation focus on the parts supply chain. “We’re optimizing our value chain to ensure that we can deliver parts and machines when our customers need them,” Hobenshield says. “Common parts and simple, more modular designs help our value chain be more nimble and short, and we’re better able to adapt to the cyclical nature of the mining industry.”
