Solutions to Reduce Emissions Intensity

There are a number of Cat solutions that help you reduce the emissions you produce. Some reductions are achieved through improvements in productivity, others directly decrease the emissions produced, and some have an impact in both areas.

RENEWABLE FUELS

Renewable fuels are an energy source made from organic matter or wastes that can play a valuable role in reducing lifecycle carbon dioxide emissions, although tailpipe GHG are essentially the same as traditional fuels.

B20 is 20% biodiesel + 80% diesel and is the highest biodiesel blend level for Mining Truck engines with aftertreatment devices for U.S. EPA Tier 4 / Stage V emissions requirements.

Machines that do not have aftertreatment devices may use higher blends up to B100 that meet specification ASTM D6751.

Cat engines are compatible with diesel fuel blended with lower-lifecycle carbon intensity fuels such as biodiesel FAME (fatty acid methyl ester). They are also compatible with renewable fuels such as HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and GTL (Gas-to-Liquid) alternative fuels that are drop-in replacements for diesel. HVO and GTL are acceptable for use in all Cat engines at any blend level and up to 100%.

Contact your renewable fuel supplier to determine the specific carbon intensity based on feedstocks and manufacturing processes of the fuel.

ELECTRIFICATION

We are gaining valuable experience from initial introductions of battery-powered equipment and the additional battery-powered machines and chargers under development that can help our customers achieve their climate-related objectives. Following the demonstration of our first battery electric 793 Cat Mining Truck Prototype in 2022, we continued to develop the Caterpillar Early Learner program, which focuses on accelerating the deployment and validation of the Cat battery electric trucks at participating customers’ sites. The building of Early Learner trucks is underway.

SCALE AND PRODUCTION STUDIES

Caterpillar scale studies utilize truck scales and bed scanners to help optimize empty machine weight, reduce carryback and ensure maximum payload. Reducing weight or payload lowers CO2 per ton.

Production Studies by Cat Job Site Solutions optimize operations and maximize productivity and utilization at the site, fleet and enterprise levels. Production studies can be conducted remotely.

SITE ASSESSMENTS

A site assessment evaluates various aspects of a mining operation, primarily looking at haul road design, haul road maintenance, traffic patterns and right of way, as well as haul road severity.

Haul road efficiency yields faster cycle times, better productivity, lower fuel burn/cycle and lower maintenance costs.

PAYLOAD OPTIMIZATION

Consistently achieving a targeted payload is a hallmark of a mature mining operation.

Caterpillar application experts, in collaboration with your Cat dealer, can help optimize your material extraction process to achieve a consistent, quantifiable and optimized payload.

Maximize productivity and minimize error with the Cat Payload system, which helps ensure trucks are optimally loaded with an accuracy of within 3%.

PARTIAL ZERO-FUEL OPERATION

A feature unique to mechanical drive trucks, the engine consumes zero fuel during resistive braking (retarding).

Zero fuel burn during braking, combined with high mechanical drive powertrain efficiencies, can decrease the truck’s fuel consumption compared to competitive trucks in the same size class.

AUTONOMOUS TRUCKS: CAT MINESTAR™ COMMAND FOR HAULING

Cat MineStar Command for hauling provides the fully integrated operation of autonomous mining systems. Autonomous trucks operate safely around other equipment, light vehicles and personnel. Command trucks respond to calls to the shovel, move into position, haul to dump points and report for maintenance — all without an operator on board.

Autonomy improves efficiency beyond staffed operations by decreasing idle time and delays, eliminating unnecessary empty travel so utilization and productivity is maximized.
