G3600 A4 Fuel Flexibility

By the Numbers

Cat® G3600 Engines with ADEM™ A4 technology come with all sorts of benefits — lower emissions, expanded altitude capability, increased power per package — but the biggest advantage is fuel flexibility. Just take a look at these four numbers:

  • Operate on fuels at a lower heating value between 750 and 2300 Btu
  • Maintain full load with no de-rate on fuels down to 30MN
  • Tolerate up to 20% inert gases
  • Accept up to 1,000 ppm of H2S

What do these numbers mean for your operation?

1. You get full power in a wider fuel band. If your engine has to de-rate because it can’t run at full load on hotter gas, then you’re not getting the power you purchased. Consider this: It can take up to 200-300 horsepower to compress and move a million standard cubic feet of gas from wellhead to pipeline per day. If your engines are de-rating, how much horsepower are you losing — and how much production are you sacrificing? The G3600 A4’s ability to maintain full power across a wider fuel range means you move more gas every day.

2. You can reduce or eliminate treatment costs. Because G3600 A4 engines can run on up to 20% inerts and up to 1,000 ppm of H2S, there’s less need to clean up gases before they reach your engine — in fact, you may be able to eliminate gas treatment entirely. That’s a big savings in capital costs.

3. You can use one engine to do more work. Traditionally, G3600 engines have been used in central gathering stations, running on higher quality gas or pipeline gas. But now, thanks to the A4’s flexibility to run on dirtier, hotter gases, operations are moving them closer to the wellhead — where they’re achieving the same amount of lift and gathering with one G3600 A4 versus multiple smaller engines. Again, that can save you a lot in both capital and operating costs.
