Caterpillar Sustainability History

We've spent the past century developing meaningful, measurable ways to help you evolve with the times and get the job done.

Take a look back at our long legacy of sustainability in action.

We debuted a 1350 kW Cat genset that can be fueled by up to 100% hydrogen, including fully renewable green hydrogen. We also began offering power generation solutions from 400 kW to 4.5 MQ that can be configured to operate on natural gas blended with up to 25% hydrogen.

We introduced the D6 XE, the world's first high drive electric drive dozer. It delivers substantial fuel savings and efficiency along with increases in productivity.

We ran our first two prototype autonomous mining trucks at a Texas limestone quarry, where they successfully hauled more than 5,000 production loads over a 2.6-mile course. Today, our autonomous equipment helps reduce (in some cases, eliminate) lost-time injuries, improve fuel efficiency and increase productivity up to 30% over human-operated fleets.3

We launched the Cat Certified Rebuild program, starting with the D8K dozer. The program allows customers to double a machine's working life at a fraction of the cost of buying new. As of 2023, Cat dealers have rebuilt more than 43,000 machines, powertrains and components.

Cat Reman was born. It began as a customer request for a low-cost repair option and has transformed into one of our most successful sustainability solutions. In 2022, Cat Reman collected 89% of end-of-life eligible returns and 140 million pounds of material.

We introduced our first Combined Heat and Power (CHP) cogeneration systems — energy-efficient technology that generates electric power and captures heat that's otherwise wasted. CHP then provides thermal energy, such as steam or hot water that can be used for space heating, cooling, domestic hot water and industrial processes.

The D9 dozer was the first Cat machine fitted with a turbocharged diesel engine. A turbocharger uses the energy from exhaust gases to force more air into the engine and generate more power. This allows us to increase power density and burn less fuel overall.

The Cat D17000 became the first engine to power a 44-ton diesel-electric locomotive. Although less "glamorous" than sleek passenger streamliners or mighty freight-haulers, it was exceptionally durable and substantially lowered fuel and maintenance costs.

We converted our dozers to run on lower-carbon-intensity fuels like butane and propane. We also converted gasoline engines to burn natural gas and provided diesel engine conversion kits that allowed customers to "modernize" their gasoline-powered tractors.

 Extending Equipment Life

Cat® products are built to last.

They are designed to withstand heavy-duty operating conditions and to be restored and used again and again. Things like rebuilds and Cat Reman give materials a new life, deliver sustainability benefits, and help us contribute to the circular economy.1

Extended Maintenance intervals

Cat filters® and fluids are designed specifically for your Cat equipment. When you use these high-quality maintenance products, you can lengthen service intervals — which saves time, lowers costs and reduces overall waste.

Cat Rebuild®

Rebuilds return your end-of-life Cat machines, systems and components to like-new condition. Doing so costs a fraction of buying new — and it extends the lifespan of machines and materials.

Cat Reman

The Cat Reman process takes worn-out components and makes them perform like new again. That reduces waste, greenhouse gas emissions and the need for new materials. And it helps you save on owning and operating costs.1

Sharing Resources to Optimize Efficiency

When you share equipment with others, you help optimize its use.

Renting Equipment can reduce CO2 emissions by around 30% —
sometimes up to 50% — depending on how equipment is used.

According to the European Rental Association2

Rental Equipment

When multiple organizations rent the same newer, more fuel-efficient equipment, utilization improves — and fuel consumption and associated emissions decrease.

Energy as a Service (EaaS)

EaaS with Cat DERMS software can remotely monitor energy system signals, analyze site and market data, and accurately predict opportunities to lower energy costs by controlling distributed energy resources including renewable generation, energy storage, firming generation, variable loads, or even whole microgrid systems.
