Cat® C13B U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final Engine, EU Stage V
The Hoover Dam. The Chunnel. The Golden Gate Bridge. Name an iconic infrastructure project and it’s likely a Doosan Portable Power product played a role in its construction or maintenance. The company got its start as Rand Drill Co. in 1902, merging four years later with Ingersoll-Sergeant Drill Co. to become Ingersoll-Rand. A century later, Doosan Infracore bought the business and Doosan Portable Power was born.
Back in 1902, the company’s initial offering was a water-cooled stationary compressor on wheels. It was the first “portable” compressor — a giant leap forward for a product that previously had to sit on a bulky, solid foundation. Fast forward 120 years and Doosan Portable Power continues to innovate in delivering mobile air, power and light solutions for construction, pipeline, mining and industrial sites around the world.
That innovation extends to the HP1600/VHP1400WCAT-T4F and XHP1170WCAT-T4F portable air compressors — two models that recently underwent a ground-up redesign following extensive research with users, fleet buyers and service technicians. They told Doosan Portable Power that reliability, durability and uptime were the three most important factors in choosing an air compressor to buy or rent. And many had an additional, related request: When would the HP and XHP be available with a Cat® engine?
The answer? Now. The Cat C13B U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final, EU Stage V engine is an option for the HP, a single-stage large air compressor capable of up to 200 psi. And it’s the only power source available for the XHP, a two-stage model that delivers even more pressure — up to 365 psi.
There’s no time for downtime when the redesigned HP and XHP air compressors go to work. They’re used to drill foundations for new buildings and bridges, test pressurization before pipelines go online and stand in for electric-driven compressors during planned factory shutdowns. “Downtime causes delays and our customers could incur penalties as a result,” says Jeremy Bailey, global director of product management for Doosan Portable Power.
All smiles. That’s why having compressors powered by Cat engines is important to a large percentage of Doosan Portable Power’s customer base. “When our customers talk reliability, durability and uptime, the first question they ask is, ‘What’s the engine?’ When we say Caterpillar, that brings a smile to their face,” Bailey says. The C13B’s fuel consumption should produce some grins, too; in testing prior to launch, Doosan Portable Power found it delivered more work per gallon of diesel fuel than previous engine models.
Keeping things simple. Other priorities in the redesign of the HP and XHP were ease of use and service. Both models feature easy-to-read screens, simple controls and full access to each side of the air compressor for scheduled maintenance. The engine needed to be just as service friendly. “We liked the new architecture and aftertreatment system of the C13B. It’s easy to package and easy to work on,” Bailey notes. “Maintenance intervals extend out to 1,000 hours with proper filtration, which also translates to more uptime.”
On site and in sight. Doosan Portable Power plans to sell or rent most HP and XHP models powered by the C13B through the Cat dealer network and train dealers on compressor-specific maintenance so they can service not just the engine but the entire product. “On many of our customers’ jobs, 90% of the equipment is yellow and Cat service techs are already on site,” Bailey says. “It’s all about convenience. With Cat dealers, and Cat parts and service available anywhere in the world, we know the product is fully supported.”
