At Caterpillar and our dealers, training is business critical. Technicians with the latest skills and knowledge keep our customers working. With in-house training departments, our dealers lead the charge in developing those skills.

In 2020, Caterpillar delivered training to over 30,000 dealer technicians, sales professionals, and leaders. Beyond virtual training, Caterpillar has 8 Learning Centers that deliver hands-on training to Cat dealer technicians around the globe.

Dealer Service Technician Job Description

Dealer Service Technicians repair and maintain equipment both in the shop and in the field. Technicians ensure that repairs are completed on time and according to manufacturer specifications. Field Technicians are on the front line of customer relationships.

Skills and Knowledge Needed
  • Desire to learn and constantly improve
  • Equipment systems and technology, diagnostics & repair
  • Up to date on current technology—interest in continuous education
  • Good customer communication skills
Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • General writing, communications, business
  • Math, computer science if available
  • Technical courses in diesel engines, hydraulics, power trains, and electric/electronics
  • Previous technician training or experience
College Education
  • A.S. or A.A.S. college degree in equipment technology highly recommended
  • AED Accredited college programs and those sponsored by equipment manufacturers are among the best

Product Support Sales/Management Job Description

Product Support Sales Managers and Representatives are responsible for sales of parts, services and product support programs both inside dealerships and in the field. They help customers understand how dealer provided parts, service, and maintenance plans can be more cost-effective and add value.

Skills and Knowledge Needed
  • In-depth knowledge of construction equipment technology and applications
  • Knowledge of Dealer’s equipment product lines and applications
  • Ability to learn in-house parts and service information systems
  • Ability to problem solve and communicate effectively with customers
  • Good customer relationship abilities
Education
  • Business or related college degrees are increasingly preferred
  • Industry-related education: sales, management, marketing and technology
  • Experience with parts and service sales in other industries a plus

Service Advisor/Management Job Description

Service Writers and Managers provide leadership, direction and support for the Service Department. They are responsible for planning, training, warranty claims, and efficient work flow with parts and technicians. Responsibilities usually include accurate quotations, correct problem diagnosis, quality control of repair and maintenance work, customer follow-up, satisfaction and retention. 

Skills and Knowledge Needed
  • Communication and problem solving with co-workers and customers
  • Ability to wear many hats, prioritize, manage details and work flow
  • Prior background as a technician or a good knowledge of equipment technology is extremely helpful
  • Staff motivation and productivity may be part of the job
Education
  • A.S. or A.A.S. college degree in equipment technology highly recommended
  • Business courses/degree helpful
  • Industry-specific courses in profitable service and service management
  • Experience with service writing or management in other industries a plus

Parts Management/Parts Warehouse Management Job Description

Parts Managers provide leadership, direction and support for a dealer Parts Department.  The job usually includes preparing the department’s annual plan/budget, sales forecasting, achieving financial goals and margins, and hiring and training staff. Parts Managers must be able to establish good relationships with customers and vendors.

Skills and Knowledge Needed
  • Strong organization, communication, customer service and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of the entire parts line & inventory
  • Technical and application knowledge of the products and parts
  • Timely/efficient inventory management: sourcing, orders, delivery, replenishment
  • Purchasing/inventory computer systems and processes 
Education
  • Two-year college technical degree or business degree recommended
  • Industry-specific courses in parts management are beneficial

Sales & Rental Management Job Description

Sales and Rental Representatives and Managers build customer relationships, sell or rent products and services, and solve customer problems within assigned territories. Representing one or more product lines, they help customers understand how dealer products and services best meet their needs. They often coordinate related issues with manufacturers and the dealership.

  • Excellent customer relationships, problem solving, oral/written communication skills, and ability to negotiate effectively
